First saw Female Vampire on late-night TV back in 2000 when I was 15. For me it was a very poetic, avant-garde - and obviously - pornographic experience. Not a good film, but an interesting one in the right setting! Either way, I've been a Franco fan ever since and have seen about 50 of his 150+ films.

As a so called "Gen X'er", it always cracks me up at how weirded out and confused millennials and Gen Z become in regard to kink for kink's sake in 70s and 80s films. The makers and initial viewers of these films were inured to this salacious morbid dynamic. Though, as a kid who was 12 in 1976, I can tell you that none of our parents would have related to this delicious excess either. We pre teen pervs and horror freaks got our needs fulfilled sneaking into rated are features or watching Drive-in movies sitting atop the fences and walls that ran around the perimeter of the drive-ins.

i have one of the missing 411 books and it was so interesting. i absolutely love that this movie was inspired but that kind of stories!! i do though feel like because of this i had too high expectations and got a little bit disappointed, especially in some of the acting of our main girl

I was waiting for you to watch this one, I like Franco's films and especially Lina Romay films. Perplexed is an interesting take. I assume this has Washing Machine vibes for you and the comedy aspects of this was fun, and Rob probably likes this as I do! Thanks for you fun review!!!

Basically just another movie of his wife Lina Romay doing what she does best. Initially i though the concept could be fun but halfway through i got pretty bored. Yeah, we get it she is a vampire but she sucks cum instead of blood. Surely mindblowing for 1973 but i couldn´t wait for it to end. Hard pass for me, even though i enjoy my ocassional Franco adventure.

I'm so glad you saw this. You cannot call yourself a Euro horror connoisseur if you have not seen this film. And you are correct, it is complete garbage. Lina is certainly beautiful and I love the soundtrack, altho god help us the theme is repeated over and over again like in The Long Goodbye. Jack Taylor is delightful in this but that is mostly due to his outrageous Spanish accent (which is odd as he's American). There is a hilarious moment where the detective meets with Dr Roberts and Dr Roberts says, "There was something surprising at the autopsy," and the detective asks, "Wasn't he dead?" Bad joke but very funny with the terrible dubbing.

I loved it! This film has it all, excellent music, Carroll Baker, sex, nudity, creepy dolls, insane asylum, under water scenes, suspense, FPV. He thought he killed her because he pushed her down and the metal flower fell on top of her. The film shows somebody else dropping the flower. The ending explains the death....it wasn't just the metal plant falling. They never show the girls face because that was a different lover and not Daniella. Daniela killed her and framed him for the murder. Daniella then escapes on vacation with the pretty nurse assistant after framing him for 2 murders and eliminating the one person who could blame her, Carroll Bakers character the half sister. They didn't get along and both were sleeping with Adrian at one point. That's why half sister had no problem killing her. The inspector asks Andrean what he did with his wife's body so the "mistress" killed was really his wife. I need to rewatch it to piece everything together but that was my understanding.

Lina looked great in her cloak and boots. And I loved the flapping bat on the front of the car 👍

If you approach a Franco movie like a regular film he will just laugh in your face. I takes years of training to grasp his intention and once you have arrived on that Franco Godhead of sleazy nirvana level you end up with over 50 of his movies in your collection and drive everyone else in your home nuts. Such is the way of uncle Jess. I'd rank Female Vampire as a solid mid tier Franco, but ratings don't realy apply nor work for this man. He's like Jazz music, you either love it or you'll go insane.

Katie, if you have'nt seen, I recommend Franco's The diabolical Dr Z, Succubus and Venus in Furs. These titles are among his best. His films are in their own universe, not unlike Jean Rollin, and they must be valued in their own context. If Franco himself often said that he hated his own movies.

So my draft comments keep turning into essays, lol. To keep it short: these American VHS versions of Franco films are what got him his reputation as an incompetent filmmaker. The films were cut to hell and back, badly dubbed and the image destroyed. This does need to be seen in its proper aspect ratio and director’s cut to properly appreciate it. Basically, like many Franco films, this is essentially a meditation on loneliness. ‘Irina’ is another recurring character-type in the Francoverse like ‘Morpho’ and ‘Linda’. She does not want to do harm but as a vampire she is driven to feed off the desire (rather than blood) of others in order to survive. She feeds by being intimate with someone, and her victim dies as a result. The closer she is to another, the more alone she is. What should be the most intimate act of physical closeness is the point of most devastating loneliness for her. Again, remember that Jess and Lina both grew up under the fascist dictatorship in Spain. Compulsion and mind control in their films often signify oppressive sociocultural and political systems that infiltrate and dictate how our minds work and alienate us from ourselves and others. The camerawork reflects this dynamic. It’s naturalistic and spontaneous, but lands on strikingly composed shots. The naturalness is jarring because we are used to cinema as artifice. The more it sees, the less we truly see. The opening is a good example, when Lina walks so close to the camera that she bumps it. She touches us the audience but also doesn’t touch us because she is only an image and not really present with us. Anyway, I’ll leave it there. Hopefully the film wasn’t too uncomfortable to watch; it certainly made for a very entertaining review!

Female Vampire didn't really do it for me, but I saw the old Image DVD. As those Franco Erotica things go, I got way more out of Countess Perverse. But, as someone below mentioned, the image quality can make all the difference with films that are all about the image (and ot much else). I think Jean Rollin's Fascination may be the gold standard for dreamy sexy vampire mood pieces - that's one I can give an only slightly qualified recommendation for - the qualification being that it IS more of a mood piece than what a lot of people expect from a movie. Franco's Faceless is one I recall being entertained by, but it has an actual story - more or less stolen from Eyes Without a Face, which was ground zero for postwar European Horror. I believe Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In is on streaming right now, and Eyes is on Max. I'd recommend checking out both of those, by the way, in chronological order. Those two films have a relationship, but if there is one film to ID as a major influence on Franco, it's Eyes Without a Face. I just want the soundtrack form every Franco film ever made. The dubbing can make a big difference sometimes. Blood and Black Lace and especially Don't Torture a Duckling are easier to take seriously in Italian, both having scenes where a character's English dubbed seizures can only be laughed at. Blood has passages where I enjoy the English dub, but Duckling really needs to be seen in Italian. The English dub makes the film seem cheap and blunts a lot of the dramatic effect, getting laughs where you don't want laughs. Of course, some of these movies live and die on their cheesiness, in which case the goofy dubbing can enhance the experience. There's nothing really to be gained by watching Strip Nude for Your Killer in Italian. It's nice when we have different listening options. I was digiging Tubi for a bit, but the image quality can be variable, you DON'T always have the best audio options, and they cut the films sometimes, and with this kind of film those things can matter a lot, so I guess it's physical media for me.

I have this on the Kino Lorber Redemption line bluray of this. The Erotikill version is on there but i have never watched it. At least the uncut version is a decent print. May have to see the version you watched cause it sounds hilarious.

The Kino blu ray is everything the version you saw isn’t. It’s not cropped, but mastered In HD in 2:35:1 widescreen. Has a French with English subtitles option. And has the preferred (not hardcore) 100 min. version. In cases like this, I think quality can matter to the point of making or breaking the viewing experience. First impressions only happen once.

The dubbing reminded me of a group of people sitting around a table for the initial script read. Reading the lines straight off of the pages while they smoke cigarettes and consume coffee and doughnuts.

I watched the kino lorber dvd 100 min cut I picked up on ebay. Yeah it really sleazy. But I'm a fan of franco sexy time stuff!!! And if you really want to see a what the F... movie, SEE "House of lost women" 1982. Severin has it on Blu ray.

I don’t think I’ve ever clicked on a video so fast in my life. OK, so my experience was very different - and thank you for steering me clear of that Amazon Prime version, I thought about it. Kino Lorber used to have a Kino Cult App that had a ton of Jess Franco and Jean Rollin films. God I wish it was still there. Anyway, I saw Female Vampire on that app. It was in French with subtitles so I avoided the bad dubbing you speak of. I think I saw the hardcore version. I say think because there was a, how should I say it - solo scene with Lina Romay that lasted several minutes. OK, not totally solo, there was a pillow involved. So I’m thinking I signed up for horror movies and I might be crossing into porn here. The atmosphere has that one of a kind Franco moodiness that draws me in, no doubt. I watched this pretty early on in discovering Franco and would be curious to watch it again. As far as dubbing. With Italian films, I am completely fine with English dubs. Some Franco films have dreadful dubs. A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD is a masterpiece when watched in French and Franco’s original 81 minute cut. In English and the cut with the zombie footage it just isn’t the same.

"Don't Watch it with your pets " LMAO. This is what you need to do, watch movies so we do not have to. Making images is what the director is supposed to do. The storytelling is the writer's job. There is no law that requires you to watch a Jess Franco film, but this guy would not let the Man tell him he couldn't make movies, and he made 200+ of them. Lina was a real looker. it is easy to see how she became Franco's muss. After she dies, Franco quickly followed her. May they all RIP.

I'm not much of a Franco.fan. but his Count Dracula with Christopher Lee is pretty great. But I would get the Severin 4k of it. It's the only transfer worth watching.

Yes! The Fenech-a-thon continues!😃 While some of these films may be better than others, watching them is always a win. I'm planning on rewatching all my Sergio Martino films in a month or so (both for a piece I'm planning on writing, and of course for fun) and since I haven't seen 'Bloody Iris' in a bit I'll include that to break them up - with the bonus of recurring actors providing continuity. 'Colours' might always be my personal favourite, but they're all great. Actually, 'Your Vice...' is a bit of a favourite too, for Edwige's Louise Brooks-style bob. It's not shallowness, it's appreciation.

I do recommend "Carlito's Way" good mob-style tragedy....you know any of those "friends" who are total parasites that drag people down with them...? Yeah. THAT kind of tragedy. Better than just a "Boy Movie". "Society", I absolutely love. Rip-roaring gross satire....funny and disturbing!

Lair of the White Worm is the weirdest dang movie I've ever seen.... I've seen it like 6 times and I still have no idea what's going on....love that steelbook though, so sweet looking

Just watched this for the first time last night and instantly became one of my favorite gialli. Definitely deserves the preservation treatment.

Weirdly I picked up the Arrow blu ray of Society last week. Such a great 80's film with some incredible work by Screaming Mad George. Be interested to hear your take on it

Ohh those are 2 of my favorite Vincent Price movies.

I hope you do a review or two on some of those Hitchcock films. He has such a great library of movies.
